CBD Where to Begin? With the Endocannabinoid System.
Nowadays most people are familiar with CBD or cannabidiol, but don’t know about the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This was discovered by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, the first scientist to isolate THC and CBD. Here is some information from us at CBD Guernsey.
ECS, it is a system that nerves and brain cells use to communicate, guiding and protecting vital physiological processes – it is a natural system found in our brain and body.
Dating back evolutionarily speaking 600 million years, the ECS has unique functions spread throughout the body including in the:
- Connective tissue
- Digestive system
- Endocrine system
- Muscular system
It is especially important in the brain and immune system, playing regulatory roles in many physiological processes such as appetite, pain-sensation, mood and memory.
The endocannabinoid system can act on a number of cannabinoids such as:
Endocannabinoids – Natural cannabinoids that the body produces on its own.
Phytocannabinoids – Phytocannabinoids are produced by the cannabis plant. This includes; CBD (cannabidiol), CBN (cannabinol) etc.
CB1 receptors are typically found in the brain and throughout the nervous system. Cannabinoids that target these receptors can have an effect on motor learning, coordination, pain modulation and metabolism.
CB2 receptors are primarily found in the immune system and thus are thought to act in a primarily protective role.
The interaction of cannabinoids with the body’s cannabinoid receptors varies from person to person, so what works for one may not work for another.
